PAD-seminar: ‘High Poverty and High Growth: The Challenge of Decent Employment in India’
tirsdag 14. september 2010 kl. 10:15 på SUM
Forskningsområdet Poverty and Development (PAD) in the 21st Century v/Senter for Utvikling og Miljø (SUM) inviterer alle interesserte til høstens første PAD-seminar, tirsdag 14. september. Og det med ingen ringere gjesteforeleser enn Prof. KP Kannan på plakaten!
Professor K. P. Kannan is a distinguished development thinker and researcher in India. Of particular relevance to this seminar’s topic, is his involvement as a member of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector in India in the period 2004—2009. The Commission’s reports resulted in widespread attention in the media and policy circles with its focus on the enormity of the challenges facing workers in the informal sector in India.
In this seminar, Prof. Kannan will discuss some of the major conclusions in the Commission’s final report and discuss the challenges ahead for the promotion of decent employment in India.
Time: Tuesday 14 September, 10:15 – 11:30 a.m.
Venue: SUM, Sognsveien 68, 4th floor seminar room
All are welcome! Please register with an e-mail to maren.aase[at]sum.uio.no.
Background material for the seminar Prof. Kannan has suggested that participants who are specially interested are welcome to read the following documents:
1. The final report of the abovementioned Commission (officially known as the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganized Sector or NCEUS) entitled The Challenge of Employment in India. (Chapter 2 that gives an overview of the main argument).
If reading the report is too time consuming, you are welcome to read the following two papers:
2. ‘India’s Common People: Who are they? How many are they? And how do they Live?’.
3. ‘Dualism, Informality and Social Inequality’.
