Video still, Touching From A Distance, Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere, 2008.
Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere’s current projects investigate contemporary music, dissent, and public fora, and move between the spatial simultaneity of performance and enunciation, reflecting upon the projection of political agency through transmission and song. Their interests lie in the formation of performative and discursive-based social spaces, along with the re-articulation of radio within such locales.
Nevarez and Tevere will discuss their recent work as well as their new project in Oslo, in collaboration with Jenny Hval, Jon Øivind Ness, and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, co-produced by the Henie Onstad Art Centre and Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival.
This Fall, Nevarez and Tevere’s work will be exhibited at Henie Onstad Art Centre, Høvikodden, Norway; Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain; The New Museum, NYC; and the Taipei Biennial, Taipei, Taiwan. Solo exhibitions and projects include: Botkyrka Konsthall, Tumba, Sweden; the Staten Island Ferry, NYC; Museo de Arte Raúl Anguiano, Guadalajara, Mexico; WUNP, unitednationsplaza, Berlin & Mexico City, among others. In 2009, the duo were artists-in-residence at the International Artists Studio Program, Stockholm, Sweden.
Nevarez is an artist, musician, and lecturer in the Department of Art, Culture, and Technology at MIT. Tevere is an artist and Associate Professor of Media Culture at the City University of New York / College of Staten Island. www.nevareztevere.in
