THREE FORMS OF GROWTH A TALK BY ZIN TAYLOR at Kunstakademiets auditorium, Fossveien 24, KHiO
Wood and Dust (Snake and Wig), 2010
This week we have the pleasure to present Zin Taylor who will discuss three of his works: Put Your Eye in Your Mouth: a conversational documentary regarding Martin Kippenberger’s Metro-Net Station in Dawson City, Yukon (2007); The Flute of Sub (2007); and The Bakery of Blok (2009). The Bakery of Blok is now shown at gallery 1857. The talk will be about the origins of these three projects… and how they developed, and the theme of Growth will be addressed.
Zin Taylor investigates the ways in which form can produce and convey meaning. His work disrupts assumptions and distorts notions of knowledge, pointedly blurring the boundary between strategy and absurdity, all the while creating intuitive, satisfying forms.
Two works from 2009, The Bakery of Blok and The Bakery of Blok and the Three Forms of Unit, assemble a narrative of transformation generated from a metaphorical group of eight abandoned blocks of wood from a closed bakery. The installations explore the development of sculptural form as a densely layered process that resembles organic growth. The blocks of wood become tools for populating their environment with other forms while form itself is depicted as a self-reproducing character in a plot where pieces of dough re-animate into living beings.
Zin Taylor (b.1978, Canada) lives and works in Brussels. His solo exhibitions include: The Bak- ery of Blok and the Three Forms of Unit, Miguel Abreu Gallery, New York (2009); The Bakery of Blok, Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto (2008); The Crystal Ship, BELvue Museum, Brussels, Belgium (2007); The Flute of Sub, Isabella Bortolozzi Galerie, Berlin (2007); and Put Your Eye in Your Mouth: a conversational documentary recording Martin Kippenberger’s Metro-net Station in Dawson City, Yukon, Etablissement d’en Face Projects, Brussels, Belgium (2007). Upcoming sole exhibitions will take place at Ursula Blickle Stiftung, Kraichtal (2011); Kiosk, Gent (2011); and Galerie Vidal Cuglietta, Brussels (2011).
