19:00 Open Forum presents: CARY LOREN Kunstakademiet i Oslo

Open Forum invites you for a talk with Cary Loren, one of the members of the band Destroy All Monsters, the 14th of May at 7pm.

Destroy All Monsters was formed by University of Michigan art students Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, Niagara (Lynn Rovner) and filmmaker Cary Loren. They were an influential Detroit band existing from 1973 to 1985, with sporadic performances since. Their music touched on elements of punk rock, psychedelic rock, heavy metal and noise rock with a heavy dose of performance art. They described their music as “anti-rock.” Destroy All Monsters never found mainstream success, but earned some notoriety due to members of notable rock groups like The Stooges and MC5 who joined the group. Although Destroy All Monsters never recorded a proper album, Sonic Youth singer/guitarist Thurston Moore released a three compact disc compilation of the group’s music in 1994. As mentioned Loren is also a filmmaker, and has been active in the US music and art scene for some years.

18:00 Open Forum Exhibition: 13 Years Of Archive Kunstakademiet i Oslo

Open Forum (Åpent Forum) : The Exhibition 22 nd March – 4th April

Open Forum is a student organized activity, consisting of a series of lectures, presentations, performances and conversations with artists, curators, theorists, authors, musicians etc. initiated and arranged by the Kunstakademiet i Oslo since 1999. The casual and laid back character of this project creates a unique environment for the meeting point for students, faculty and a general audience with an international art sphere. Because this setting has been profoundly fertile for the academy, we would like to reflect it in the exhibition. Therefore, it will have an open and informal feel to it, rather than to present an empirical take on the archive. Open Forum usually takes place at the Academy’s auditorium, mainly held in English and open for a general public. The lectures are recorded and archived. After visiting the archives at the library of Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, we have decided that it was an opportune moment to make this knowledge visible and accessible. This is in line with our goal to have the complete archive online and within reach for everyone on the internet.

19:00 Why are ‘independent’ curators dependent? The critique of curatorial apparatus in late capitalism. Open Forum presentation by Kuba Szreder Kunstakademiet i Oslo

Why are ‘independent’ curators dependent? The critique of curatorial apparatus in late capitalism Open Forum presentation by Kuba Szreder 19:00-20:30 + drinks

My current research focuses on scrutinizing the social and economic contingencies of the freelance, ‘independent’ curatorial practice. I am trying to critically approach a ‘project making’ as the prevalent mode of contemporary cultural production, adopted equally by curators and artists. We, the freelancers, usually begin to organize project to free ourselves from disciplinary regimes of art institutions or commercial pursuits of art market. But, after a while, we find ourselves entangled in possibly a bit more subtle, but definitely not less efficient, distributed networks of power and administrative control. In my presentation I will try to sketch various aspects of ‘project making’, such as ‘grant art’, short-termism, lack of disposable time, competitive networking, entrepreneurial socializing, self-precarization, administration of aesthetics. Last but not least I will ask if and how it is possible to resist these tendencies. My presentation will refer to my practical experiences as a freelance curator.

19:00 Open Forum presents: HOLGER BECH NIELSEN Kunstakademiet i Oslo

OPEN FORUM is glad to invite you for a talk with HOLGER BECH NIELSEN, Danish theoretical physicist, Professor emeritus at the Niels Bohr Institute, at the University of Copenhagen, where he started studying physics in 1961.

Nielsen has made original contributions to theoretical particle physics specifically in the field of string theory. Independently of Nambu and Susskind, he was the first to propose that the Veneziano model was actually a theory of strings and this is why he is considered among the fathers of string theory. He was awarded the highly esteemed Humboldt Prize in 2001 for his scientific research. Several physics concepts are named after him, e.g. Nielsen-Olesen Vortex and the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem for representing chiral fermions on the lattice. In the original Dual-Models, which later would be recognized as the origins of String Theory, the Koba-Nielsen variables are also named after him and his collaborator Ziro Koba. He is known in Denmark for his enthusiastic public lectures on physics and string theory, and he is often interviewed in daily news, especially on matters regarding particle physics.
